Stefanie  Simpson  is  the  Blue  Carbon  Program  Manager  for  Restore America’s Estuaries. She works to build regional and national capacity for utilizing blue carbon ecosystem services to increase  investment  in  coastal  restoration  and  conservation.  Prior to RAE she was an ORISE Fellow for the EPA’s Office of Water,  worked  for  the  South  Carolina  Department  of  Natural  Resources National Estuarine Research Reserve, and served for two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Philippines working with fisherfolk on coastal resource management. Stefanie has her B.S. in biology from Clemson and a M.S. in Environmental Studies from the College of Charleston.
About the Talk

Blue carbon ecosystem services can lead to an increased value of coastal wetlands for their ability to sequester and store carbon in their biomass and soils. Protecting and restoring  coastal  ecosystems  can  prevent  CO2  emissions,  increase  carbon  sequestration, and reduce emissions of methane and nitrous oxide, while supporting other  key  ecosystem  services.  The  voluntary  carbon  market  provides  a  platform  for  those interested in reducing their carbon footprint to invest in offsets that support sustainable  projects.  This  presentation  will  cover  the  basics  of  the  voluntary  carbon  market, approved methodologies for tidal wetland restoration activities, project requirements to earn offsets, and challenges and remaining science needs.
