Carbon Monitoring System NRA in ROSES 2022

The Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences for 2022 (ROSES—2022 NNH22ZDA001N) NASA Research Announcement (NRA) is soliciting research for the Carbon Monitoring System

Solicitation: 14 February 2022
Notice of Intent Due: 2 August 2022
Proposal Due: 28 October 2022

The Carbon Monitoring System is an innovative program focused on applying NASA Earth observing capabilities to support the national and international need for carbon monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV). Since the program began in 2010, researchers have emphasized the use of NASA satellite data and scientific expertise with ground capabilities in order to better understand the carbon cycle. To be relevant to a broad suite of stakeholders and data users, CMS projects need to engage with data users throughout their project in order to produce the most useful data products.

For those new to CMS, the following resources will provide an introduction and overview of the organization, objectives, research findings, and knowledge gaps, as of January 2022.

Collaborators and Stakeholders

There are many stakeholders and collaborators engaged with the NASA Carbon Monitoring System in its applications efforts, which are focused on broadening and strengthening the knowledge and engagement of institutions about carbon monitoring products and processes. The applications initiative addresses two key priorities for understanding stakeholder interests and requirements for CMS prototyping efforts: 1) to understand and engage the user community and stakeholders involved in developing carbon monitoring products, and 2) to evaluate current and planned NASA CMS products with regards to their value for decision making by appropriate users. Description of user requirements and needs will be communicated to the CMS science community to help guide prototype development and CMS product generation. The CMS Applications initiative also develops and fosters a diverse range of participatory methodologies to encourage the joint translation of science capabilities and user needs.

Scientists applying for the CMS 2022 opportunity should consider developing synergistic research collaborations with organizations developing applications before applying. Organizations using carbon data products are found at multiple scales - community, city, state, region, nation and globe.

The Stakeholder Workshop held on day 1 of the CMS Science Team meeting is a rich resource describing successful stakeholder interactions (see online agenda with presentations).
