About the Talk

TreeBaltimore is a city-wide, community forestry partnership united around the common goal of increasing and improving the urban tree canopy (UTC) of Baltimore.  The partnership is made up of NGOs, city agencies, as well as, state and federal representatives that coordinate resources, organize tree plantings, and participate in research studies.  TreeBaltimore is part of Baltimore City’s Urban Forestry Division, which is part of the Department of Recreation and Parks and deals with all trees on public space and right-of-way (ROW). In April 2017, the Urban Forestry Division launched the city’s first full street tree inventory. This inventory will be completed this summer and will include the collection of data for every tree and vacant or potential planting sites in city street ROW and maintained areas of city parks. This session will provide an overview of the TreeBaltimore initiative, its successes and challenges, and discuss potential ways that NASA can help the city of Baltimore, as well as other cities, monitor changes in urban canopy cover.
