About the Talk

In 2015, the Paris Agreement marked the successful conclusion of many years of negotiation, and set a global target of holding warming to “well below 2°C above preindustrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C above preindustrial levels.” In 2014, the New York Declaration on Forests (NYDF) was endorsed by more than 150 governments and organizations, committing to end natural forest loss by 2030, restore 350 million hectares of degraded and deforested lands by 2030, support the private sector in eliminating deforestation in the supply chain of major agricultural commodities by 2020, provide financial support to reduce emissions related to deforestation and forest degradation, and improve forest governance and land rights. Effective monitoring and evaluation of progress and translation into interventions and policy is critical to meet these ambitious goals. Climate Focus leads the NYDF Progress Assessment and a study that evaluates the land sector pathway towards 1.5°C and contribution to the Paris Agreement. This session will provide an overview of Climate Focus’ NYDF and Paris Agreement work, discuss how to link technical assessments to policies and revised NDC submissions, and highlight data gaps and needs.
