About the Talk

The GEOMAR - Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, Germany, in close collaboration with Prof. Carlos Duarte from the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Saudi-Arabia is developing a decision-support tool in the form of the interactive digital Global NBS and NETs Atlas. The overall objective of this Webatlas is to synthesize and geospatially visualize reliable scientific findings on climate mitigation and adaptation potentials and cost estimates of various naturaland technically-based carbon dioxide removal and storage options (marine and terrestrial) with global coverage using input from various research projects at KAUST and GEOMAR as well as from various data providers such as research institutes and NGOs. This synthesized information is a necessary basis for decision-making in the strategic development of viable paths that are compatible with the Paris climate targets. In contrast to the predominantly text-based, globally aggregated information available to date, the Webatlas will provide an easily accessible spatially differentiated assessment of the various NBS and NETs at global to local scales (i.e., via interactive maps). Embedded, concise information texts provide the user with key information and link to relevant publications, ongoing projects, as well as bestpractice examples, which may serve as a planning guide. The Atlas will be a living repository of data that is automatically and continuously updated. The Global NBS and NETs Atlas addresses political and social decision-makers, who have an influence on the strategic development of our society in dealing with climate change (International Organizations, NGOs, public authorities etc.) as well as economic actors that are for instance in search of compensation options.

About the Speaker

Fabian Reith is a Postdoc in the Biogeochemical Modeling Group at GEOMAR - Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, Northern Germany. After studying physical geography at Kiel University, Reith received his PhD at GEOMAR in 2018 as part of Priority Program 1689 of the German Research Foundation (DFG), in which he investigated the effects of different climate engineering methods on the carbon cycle using numerical models. After establishing the Helmholtz Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Unit for Earth and Environment at the Research Institute Hereon, he returned to GEOMAR in 2020 to develop the interactive digital Global NBS and NETs Atlas, a decision-support tool for the development of viable climate change mitigation strategies.
